Abu Bakr struggled with reading and with keeping up with the class pace in grade 3. This was a concern for us as we did not want him to fall behind in school. It was also concerning that the following year he would be in grade 4 and starting with exams. This certainly affected his confidence and in turn his ability to trust and believe in himself and his ability to excel in school. We realised that immediate intervention was needed and therefore investigated the Edublox approach and felt it was the correct environment for him to catch up to the required level.
It has taken a while, I would say a good year before we started seeing tangible results. His reading, but more his confidence in reading has improved. He was no longer afraid to read something on a billboard or on TV as he previously was. He has learnt to cope much better in class and that is evident in him completing most tasks in class. It is also evident in class assessments (over above cycle test) that he understands the work presented to him as he achieves above average marks. In term 1 and term 2 of grade 4 in 2016 he averaged 68%, which was slightly higher than the grade average of 67.98%. This was disappointing to him as he wanted at least a bronze certificate (between 69% and 74%). I enrolled him in June 2016 in the Studiblox course and I believe that he has improved in the way he approaches his work. His efforts finally paid off in term 3 when he achieved a 74% average, which was substantially higher than the grade average of 65.78% for the term and received a bronze medal (he missed silver by 1% — silver is 75%). Even though the grade average dropped by 2.2% in term 3, Abu Bakr increased his overall average by 6%. He also received a certificate of achievement in mental maths in term3. This was pleasing to both him, Yassien and myself.
Abu Bakr is very determined to obtain a gold certificate which is 81% and above in term 4.
I think the pleasant surprise for all of us was the recent re-assessment done at Edublox. He has made significant improvement in all areas and we are proud of him and the efforts shown.
The approach and method used by Edublox increases confidence in the learner and in turn the learner believes that he has the ability to achieve anything.
